Breed Characteristics
About Akita
The Akita is a large, powerful dog breed with a noble and intimidating presence. Originally from Japan, Akitas were bred for hunting and guarding, giving them a loyal, alert, and protective temperament. They are reserved with strangers but deeply devoted to their families. Akitas are intelligent and strong-willed, requiring consistent training and socialization from an early age. Their thick double coat sheds heavily twice a year, and they come in various colors including red, white, and brindle. While Akitas are independent and dignified, they are also affectionate with those they trust.
